Why Camping in the Fall is Better Than the Summer

Why Camping in the Fall is Better Than the Summer

Camping’s most popular season is definitely the summer, and that can account to a lot of things like the fact that children are off from school and that it’s warm out. On the other hand, fall camping gets a bit of worse rep, but we’re here to clear up any confusion and give you 5 reasons camping in the fall might actually be better than the summer!

The scenery is unbeatable

Sure, most people love the warmth of summer, but there is one thing summer will never be able to offer: fall foliage. When the winter starts to creep up on us, the trees start to prepare by taking on incredibly vibrant hues of yellow and red. This is a sight that can’t be beat, and you simply can’t find it during any other season. While you’ll probably get to experience fall colours a bit around the city, the full beauty can only be fully experienced when you’re immersed in areas like Banff (Alberta) or Muskoka (Ontario).

The campsites are rarely busy

This is great for more than one reason. First and foremost, it’s way easier to get a campsite in the area you want to go to, so you won’t have to drive an extra hour or two to get to the campsite that has space. Because of this, it’s also more viable to plan a pretty last minute trip. It’s is also great because you can count on more privacy and usually a lot more room for roaming around and exploring. Even better, this generally means that campsites will cost less during the fall season.

It’s cooler

You’re probably thinking we’re crazy right about now, but hear us out! Warm weather is lovely, but after a long cozy night, it is almost inevitable that in the summer you will be waking up feeling like you’re cooking in your bed, especially if you had to turn the heating on for the night. This is a significantly smaller problem once the weather begins to cool down and the sun rises a bit later, so you’ll get to sleep in a little bit longer. Even better, you’ll be able to do more of the activities that you love during the day. Hiking and biking a lot more enjoyable when you don’t feel like you’re melting.

Less bugs

With cooler weather and drier air comes the incredible pleasure of not having to deal with bugs. By the time fall starts to roll around, you can be almost certain that you won’t be dealing with annoying mosquitoes and slightly (or very) frightening wasps that keep attacking you for your food. This time of year you will really have the chance to completely kick back and relax without having to be on the watch for insects to shoo. It’s pretty nice that you won’t have to use bug spray, making it the ideal camping time for those that always forget to pack some.

Different clothes

Now is the time to whip out all the “camping chic” attire you have. Jeans, a plaid flannel shirt and a vest hold a special spot in every Canadian’s heart, but this combo rarely sees the light of day unless you’re spending the day outside in the fall. Make the most of these ultra cozy clothes by spending pretty much all of your time outside on a weekend camping trip this season. Pair this kind of comfort with a toasty fire to curl up beside, and you have the perfect setup for an awesome fall getaway.
