Cooking While Camping: Things to Cook on a Stick

Cooking While Camping: Things to Cook on a Stick

To kick-off our camping recipes blog series, where we plan to bring you great suggestions and things to make while out enjoying the wilderness, we thought we’d start with a camping classic: Stuff on Sticks.

There’s the classic hotdog, smoky, or sausage on a stick, which are self-explanatory…but check out this photo if you need to know how to do it:

However, there are several slightly more complicated foods you can also make over the campfire using a stick that are equally if not way more delicious. Here’s one of our favourites:

Kebabs

Prep Time: 40 minutes | Cook Time: 15-20 minutes | Yield: serves many

Ingredients:

– Meat cubes of your choice (chicken, pork, or beef work well as does salmon)

– Red peppers

– Onion

– Mushrooms

Marinade:

– ½ cup of soy sauce

– ½ cup of canola oil

– 3 tbsp. lime juice

– 1 tsp sugar

– 1-2 tsp of your favourite hot sauce (we recommend Sambal)

– 1 tsp garlic powder

– 1 tsp onion powder

– 1 tsp black pepper

Equipment Needed: 8 thick wood sticks or long metal skewers (for cooking the kebabs); bonfire, campfire, or fire pit

Instructions: Mix marinade ingredients together in a zip lock bag. Put cubed meat in the marinade bag and set-aside for 30 minutes. If using wooden sticks, soak in water for 10-15 minutes to avoid them burning over the fire while the kebabs are cooking. While the meat is marinating, cut the peppers and onion into large cubes. Half the mushrooms. After 30 minutes remove the meat and assemble the skewers alternating pieces of meat between peppers, mushrooms, and onion. Cook the skewers over the fire, holding them and rotating frequently. If a fire grate is available, use that to place the kebabs directly on it to grill them. Cook until meat is cooked through or to desired wellness (about 15-20 minutes). Eat and enjoy!Have a great camping recipe or tip you’d like to share?
