RV and Ski
Ski season has started! Get out on the slopes and make the most of your trailer by heading to a resort that allows you to RV overnight or that you can camp nearby. These are some of our favorites from across the country.
Revelstoke
Revelstoke’s claim to fame is it’s awesome vertical. Boasting 1,713 meters of lift-accessed vertical, this ski hill is essentially the tallest in all of North America and that pretty much means you’ll have the most potential for “mountain experience”. Numbers aside, you’ll find challenging terrain, incredible snow and a pretty sweet tube park. This mountain resort allows one complimentary night of (no hook-up) RVing right in its parking lot. Just head to The Sutton Place Hotel front desk to get your permit. High Five to that!! Fall in love and want to stay longer? You can also camp at Canada West Campground which opens around December 15th after their winter construction.
Norquay
Small but mighty, Norquay has more than enough variety to satisfy every type of skier and boarder here. Beginners can hit the Sundance Conveyor, while advanced skiers can try the steep slopes of the North American lift or the narrow runs by the Mystic Express Chair. Due to its size, you can’t actually RV on the hill, but you can RV at the year-round Tunnel Mountain II Campground which is located in the town of Banff and puts you about 5 minutes from the hill – much easier than the hour it will take you to get here from Calgary.
Sun Peaks
You’ll get the best of both worlds at Sun Peaks, the country’s second largest ski area, with awesome slopes for alpine skiers and a great selection of Nordic (cross-country ski) trails – close to 38 km of groomed and set tracks and 17 km of backcountry trails. With most alpine runs being intermediate and advanced, experienced skiers are guaranteed to find an area they love, from groomed, mogul and glade runs. The resort also features a European style village that is fun to check out, even for a non-skier. Sun Peaks offers 8-10 first come, first serve RV spots right on the mountain for just $20 a night and you can stay up to 7 nights!
Hidden Valley Highlands
Unlike most ski hills that you’ll find out west, Ontario tends to have smaller mountains with fewer runs, making them great for families. Case in point, Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area, features just 15 runs in total. Despite its size, you can still find something for most skiers here, from green to double black runs. The big selling point of these smaller hills is that the tickets tend to be drastically less expensive and you can often do 2 hour or 4 hour passes, so that you don’t have to commit to a full day or skiing during half-day hours. While there is no onsite RVing here, RVers can winter camp at Mew Lake Campground which is less than an hour away and located in one of the provinces most beautiful parks. While here, campers can also take full advantage of the incredible cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on location at Algonquin Park and experience some of its wildlife.
